In September, three plays were shown to the public: 99 PERFUMES in Grasse, 99 WOMEN BOARD READY in Paris and 99 VOICES in Avignon. The shows were performed sometimes online, sometimes covered with a mask. THE 99 PROJECT is moving through thick and thin

Where are we now?

99 VOICES, Habitat & Humanism

On September 25, the online premiere of 99 VOICES took place from the offices of Habitat & Humanism in Nice. A play co-written and played in collaboration with members of Habitat & Humanism and inspired by their life stories.

On stage:  Nadia N’Nonga, Katia Kowalski, Omontayo Bada, Carole Lai Tong, Michel Vadé and Abdel Tebaa.
Backstage: The local team (HH06) Didier Maze-Launay, Mario Ulacia, Karen Medina, Charlotte Modiano and Astrid Perroy in Lyon

We dreamed of playing 99 VOICES at the Gilgamesh Belleville theater in Avignon as part of the Festival C’est pas du luxe! Five rehearsals had taken place in September in Nice with a small crew formed by tenants, volunteers and employees of the movement. We were on a tightrope, but motivated and ready to go on stage. On Friday September 18th, the festival informed us that it was postponed due to sanitary conditions. We expected it a little. Volunteers and employees of Habitat & Humanism in Nice and in Lyon joined forces so that we could still perform the play online. About 100 people watched the performance on their computer screens. We performed in front of a wall, without seeing or hearing the audience. It was a confusing situation as an authentic theatrical experience is grounded in the physical presence of the actors and the audience. Still, the actors were remarkably focused and engaged and the reading suggested moving comments from all over France.

"

I enjoyed watching the play. I found the texts powerful and I was blown away by the performance: many emotions emerged; I had tears in my eyes several times! Christine B.

At the end of the performance, we heard terrible news. One of the residents, Geraldine, who shared her story and participated in the writing workshops, died suddenly from cardiac arrest. She was 40 years old.  Her text in the play is a testament to her newfound confidence. As Bernard Devert, president of Habitat & Humanism, said : “Life hurted her but with Habitat & Humanism she found a space of friendship and fraternity; a future was emerging. Geraldine left us a powerful message that will nurture our determination to create new horizons of light and show rainbows”. The play  99 VOICES is dedicated to her. In the weeks and months to come, there is no doubt that these 99 VOICES will still resonate in many ways. Because we haven’t said our last word.

99 WOMEN BOARD READY, ESSEC EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

The play 99 WOMEN BOARD READY was presented during the closing party of the Women Board Ready program at ESSEC Business School, on September 16, 2020 in Paris, at the CNIT.

On stage: Nandini Colin, Virginie Gozin,  Fanny Potier, Séverine Jarry-Lefort,  Marie-Jeanne Augendre, Laurianne Le Chalony, Marie-Hélène Pauwels, Christine-Anne Chevry and Geneviève

Covered with masks but not trapped

99 WOMEN BOARD READY is a documentary play about women and power. The project imagined by Geneviève Flaven and Professor Viviane de Beaufort, was designed to support the Women Board Ready program at ESSEC Business School: a training course intended to “equip women” who wish to access company boards. Written from the exchanges by some sixty women business leaders during collective online workshops, the play deals with various themes: gender stereotypes, dysfunctions of boards of directors or the purpose of businesses, well, many subjects and situations where women executives can find themselves “trapped”. Indeed, they are eager to carry “different” values at the top of the company but without risking marginalization or losing their cool. Impossible equation? Perhaps. … The play allowed them to express their points of view freely and bring out some messages shared by all.

“I was expecting to get out of traditional forms of expression, and I wanted to live a real collective experience. And it is a success!”
“It is important to allow talented women to take a stand on governance issues, to have them speak out.”
“This allowed me to gain confidence and get familiar with the real life of the Board.”
“Despite the lack of availability and the covid-19, the experience was all very “joyful”
“I love to learn, explore and get out of my comfort zone.”

What’s next?

99 LIVE LEBANON, Lebanon

A collective of translators translated the texts of the future piece 99 LIVE LEBANON into Arabic, English and French during the months of August and September under hard conditions. Sarah Bussy of THE 99 PROJECT looks back on the collaborative writing and translation experience before we dive into the dramatic composition of the play beginning of November.

The documentary and collaborative theater project 99 LIVE LEBANON was launched in October 2019 in the wake of the revolution of Lebanese civil society. The project has since progressed in fits and starts shaken by the disasters that have befallen relentlessly in Lebanon: financial crisis, health crisis and recently, the explosion on August 4th. Each time, the question was raised : should we continue or concentrate on actions more directly “useful” to the Lebanese? What strikes me is that the participants always answered : present! I guess that they find in these shared moments of writing and translation a space to speak freely, to be listened to and resist. Writing and translating a play is not a superficial activity. Culture is what holds us together, individually and collectively.

Thank you to the translators team: Aya Dalloul, Joanna Tyan, Magda Saleh, Sarah Taleb, Mona Mardelli Assaf, Rana Haj, Sarah Bussy, Isabelle Zighondi, Geneviève Flaven, Christine Safi and Sarah Taled!

Sarah Bussy is a writer, a director, a creativity writing and oral communication teacher.  She initiated the first contact with Lebanon thanks to Carol Mezher of FFFMED (a residency for female scriptwriters from the Mediterranean area). Then  facilitated the English writing workshops, wrote a few texts, translated from French to English, and revised the English translations. she will also work on the composition and editing of the play and the staging of the France based performance. In short, Sarah is involved at all stages of the project! She shares her experience of the writing and translation phases of the 99 LIVE LEBANON project.

99 STUDENTS, Nice

An exciting new application of THE 99 PROJECT will begin with students of the Master in Innovation and Cluster Management at the University of Nice. The idea is, through the co-creation of a theater play to engage students in the discovery and embodiment of their future jobs.

The mission of the Master in Innovation and Cluster Management is to train talents capable of supporting the economic development of regions by attracting companies and investors. The offer of job positions is growing, but the roles and responsibilities involved in these new professions are still rather unclear. In this context, this new project will engage students in the co-creation of an original piece to build a living panorama of their future professions reflect the diversity of professional practices and imagine their future responsibilities.

Su scène :  Nadia N’Nonga, Katia Kowalski, Omontayo Bada, Carole Lai Tong, Michel Vadé and Abdel Tebaa.
En coulisses : L’équipe HH06 Didier Maze-Launay, Mario Ulacia, Karen Medina, Charlotte Modiano et Astid Perroy à Lyon
"

99 WOMEN BOARD READY, ESSEC EXECUTIVE EDUCATION

003

On stage: Nandini Colin, Virginie Gozin,  Fanny Potier, Séverine Jarry-Lefort,  Marie-Jeanne Augendre, Laurianne Le Chalony, Marie-Hélène Pauwels, Christine-Anne Chevry and Geneviève

Merci à l’équipe de traductrices : Aya Dalloul, Joanna Tyan, Magda Saleh, Sarah Taleb, Mona Mardelli Assaf, Rana Haj, Sarah Bussy, Isabelle Zighondi, Geneviève Flaven, Christine Safi and Sarah Taled!
